Mobile Usability Reports Now Included In Webmaster Tools

The Mobile Usability Report
And Its Impact On SEO

Google just revealed its brand-new function now ready to use in the Google Webmaster Tools. Announced on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 this new reporting tool is used for tracking issues related to mobile functionality within websites.

Named the” Mobile Usability Report”, this new rollout application is built into the Google Webmaster Tools set and readily accessible at Notice the URL is in the “webmaster/tools” lineup indicating a major commitment by Google.

The purpose for the Mobile Usability Report application is to reveal site owners the usability problems (read issues) that are occurring within a site so they can be corrected. This is intended to improve the site user experience, upon which Google is now placing major emphasis.

The report lists specific errors for Flash content (this triggers warnings), tiny fonts because they are difficult to read on mobile devices, missing viewport meta tag for mobile pages, fixed width viewports, plus links or buttons that are clickable that are too close together.

This new Google report has a direct impact on SEO campaigns; make certain your Internet Marketing strategy includes mobile usability.  Websites absolutely must be designed for mobile devices or suffer a downgrade in the Google rankings.  SEO specialists will not be able to find a workaround for this issue.  It must be addressed at the site architecture level . . . mobile usability is definitely a site design issue.

Google search on mobile device

Every Site We Design Is Mobile Friendly

Mobile devices, mobile phones, iPads, and notebooks are hugely popular; in fact more than half of all Internet searches in most countries come from these devices. In the U.S. mobile device use will soon overtake the traditional PC desktop for Internet search. On February 26, 2015, Google announced that “Mobile Friendly” websites will receive more favorable consideration than sites that are not mobile friendly. Not familiar with what “mobile friendly” is all about? Basically it means your website has “responsive design” so the website looks good on all devices, no matter how small or large the screen size.

Error Reporting

About the Mobile Usability Report errors . . .

On July, 15th, 2014, Google announced that it would flag a site a site designed fully in Adobe Flash. Google is recommending site owners convert to HTML5.

A tiny font is basically a font that is unreadable. There is no specific size listed. Mobile font sizing is based on a font size of 16 CSS pixels.

A viewport is a framed area on a display screen for viewing information. Basically, it’s what you see on your “screen.” A meta viewport tag gives the browser instructions on how to control the page’s dimensions and scaling. The meta viewport tag should look like this:

<meta name=viewport content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1″>

Fixed width viewports: Forcing the user to scroll horizontally or to zoom out in order to see the whole page results in a poor user experience.

Links and Buttons are also called “Tap Targets and it is recommended that they be at least 48 CSS pixels tall/wide. Buttons and links that are too close together will result in major frustration for users.

Google’s back talk indicates that mobile UX will soon be a ranking signal in the Google’s algorithm. John Mueller, Google’s Webmaster Trends Analyst team based in Zurich (noted for “leaking” future Google trends) stated that Google “ . . . strongly recommend you take a look at these issues in Webmaster Tools.”

Mobile device usability is becoming increasingly important for website owners. Recent studies indicate that if a mobile user has a good experience on a website, there is a 61% probability that person will return to that site.
